Toyota Yaris Brief History
Toyota Yaris was introduced as a replacement for Tercel and Starlet in 1999. In some markets, Toyota Yaris was sold with different names such as Toyota Echo and Toyota Vitz. Initially, Toyota Yaris was offered in three body styles including a 2-door sedan, a 2-door hatchback, and a 4-door sedan.
The 2-door sedan was later removed from the lineup and it’s now sold in only two body styles. The company also launched a Hybrid-R sports variant for users who need more power with better fuel efficiency. Based on continuously increasing demand, Toyota has significantly increased the production of Toyota Yaris over the recent years.
Evolution of Toyota Yaris
Toyota has launched 4 generations of Toyota Yaris to continue providing a better experience to its users with innovative changes.
First Generation (1999-2005)
First-generation Toyota Yaris was launched in three different body styles known as a coupe, hatchback, and sedan. It was launched with a 1SZ-FE 998cc 16v four-cylinder petrol engine with the ability to produce 67bhp. It earned a great reputation because of its excellent performance and top-quality safety features.
Second Generation (2006-2013)
Second Generation Toyota Yaris was offered as a hatchback and a sedan with tons of amazing tech features. The base variant was launched with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder VVT-i petrol engine with the ability to produce 68bhp. But the 1.3L engine remained more popular among buyers.
In 2007, Toyota added intelligent valve timing on both intake and exhaust to provide greater efficiency and smoother performance.
Third Generation (2014-Present)
The third-generation Toyota Yaris was once again launched as a hatchback and a sedan. This version’s length was increased by almost 100mm. The users could choose between three different engine options including 1.0-L triple and 1.3-L four-cylinder petrol engines and 1.4-L turbo diesel.
