Toyota Prius History
Toyota Prius was the first mass-produced petrol-electric hybrid car that was launched in 1997. It was initially launched as a four-door sedan but the company converted it into a five-door liftback in 2003. On the basis of smog-forming emissions, Toyota Prius was ranked among the cleanest vehicles sold in the United States in 2007.
It once again won the second-most-fuel-efficient gasoline-powered car ranking in 2018. The United States and Japan are the largest markets for Prius.
Evolution of Toyota Prius
Toyota has launched 4 generations of Toyota Prius over the years with several innovative changes.
First Generation (2001-2003)
Although Prius was launched in the Japanese market in 1997, it was introduced in the US in 2001. Toyota Prius first generation was launched with a 1.5L 4-cylinder engine. The reason why it became popular is that it doesn’t need to be charged at night. But some users criticized its abnormal tire wear, nonlinear brake feels, and subpar safety ratings.
Second Generation (2004-2009)
The second-generation Prius was launched as a hatchback which brought it to the mid-size segment. This generation was launched with a side airbag and its safety rating also improved from the previous one. The gas engine was now able to produce 76-hp while the electric engine could now produce 67-hp.
Third Generation (2010-2015)
Third Generation Prius was launched with a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine with the ability to produce 134-hp. This version’s handling and the interior was better than its predecessors. This time, Toyota offered 7 standard airbags with all the variants.
Fourth Generation (2016-2022)
Fourth Generation Prius was launched with more classic front and rear styling. The vehicle’s fuel efficiency was significantly improved in this variant. The company is now providing Lithium-ion batteries in some of the variants.
