Toyota 86 Brief History
Toyota 86 was launched in 2012 as a two-door fastback coupe. It was a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru and it was manufactured at Subaru’s Gunma Assembly Plant.
It was marketed as Toyota 86 and Toyota GT86 in different markets. The second-generation Toyota 86 was marketed as GR86 in the international markets. And it’s the model we find in the US market these days.
Although it’s named after older generation Corolla GT-S, its design and performance is a lot different than the modern-day Corolla. It may be a bit surprising but the history of this vehicle goes back to April 1965 when Toyota launched its small, sporty coupe, Toyota Sports 800, in Japan.
Toyota Sports 800 was later produced as GT2000 in 1967. And the production of Toyota 86 finally started in 2012.
Evolution of Toyota 86
Toyota has launched two generations of this vehicle since 2012 because it’s designed for car lovers who like to have a sports car at affordable rates.
First Generation (2012-2020)
First Generation Toyota 86 was a 6-wheel automatic rear-wheel drive equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that could deliver 205-horsepower. The vehicle was initially launched with 16-in steel wheels that were later upgraded to 17-in alloy wheels. With a 50/50 percent weight distribution, this model provided amazing handling.
It was launched with advanced features including automatic climate control, LED daytime running lights, keyless start with an engine start button, high-intensity discharge headlights, and more.
Second Generation (2021-Present)
As we’ve mentioned, the second-generation Toyota 86 was marketed as GR86 in the United States and other markets. The second generation is available as a 6-wheel automatic and 6-wheel manual transmission.
With a 2.4L engine, it can produce 228-horsepower. It brings advanced safety features like smart stop technology, hill start assist control, LATCH Child Seat Anchor System, and more.
