How the Company Got Started

Not many people know that Toyota actually started as a textile business called Toyoda Automatic Loom Words Ltd., not a car manufacturer. After an unsuccessful launch of his first product in 1892, the Toyoda wooden handloom, Toyoda began manufacturing other products such as power and circular looms. This business turned into an immediate success, leading the company to develop automobiles in the early 1930s and become incorporated by 1937. The next several decades were full of even more victory for Toyota, leading the company to become a world leader in automobile manufacturing and a household name.

Toyota has many brands and companies underneath them, including Lexus Daihatsu and Hino Motors. Lexus products can be purchased in the United States, while Daihatsu and Hino Motors are primarily Asian-based. They also have stake in Fiju Industries, the overheading company for Subaru, and Isuzu.

The Logo

Toyoda Logo

Over the past 8 decades, the Toyota logo has changed significantly. The original logo developed in 1935 featured the original spelling (“Toyoda”). In 1936, the company hosted a competition across Japan to see who could design the most eye-catching logo. The chosen one featured the Japanese spelling for Toyota with a circle surrounding them.

The logo we are familiar with today was created and introduced on October 2, 1989, sticking around ever since.

Geographic Popularity

Traditionally, Toyota’s best-selling vehicle has been the Corolla or the Camry – all considered their most popular and dependable vehicles. However, 2020 surprised the automotive industry when it was announced that the
RAV4 was the best-selling vehicle. With the newest version being released in 2019, the RAV4 features outstanding safety additions and outdoor capabilities, as well as an upgraded fuel economy. The 2020 version enhanced the features from the previous year, creating a stellar vehicle for purchase.

Most Popular Model

Because Toyota is an international company based in Japan, its influence can be seen across the world. Toyota vehicles are manufactured and sold in the following countries: Japan, United States, Canada, France, Poland, Turkey, the U.K., China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Kenya, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Columbia, Mexico, Venezuela, and Australia. Japan and the United States have the highest demand for Toyota vehicles, with China following closely behind them. While their popularity continues to grow, these world areas see continued, consistent growth in their population’s interest in Toyota cars.

Sustainability

Toyota is also one of the leading car companies in making significant changes to achieve a more environmentally-friendly manufacturing process. Their Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 is described as “a set of six visionary challenges that will create a net positive impact on the planet and society. [They are] guiding our efforts to build a better, smarter, more sustainable future.” It aims to:

  1. “Reduce CO2 emissions from new vehicles by 90%
  2. Eliminate CO2 emissions from operations, suppliers, and dealers
  3. Conserve water and protect water resources
  4. Support a recycling-based society
  5. Conserve biodiversity, protect species, and restore habitats.”

Vehicles like the Pruis demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, showing that they are focused on creating a better future for their customers. With all this evidence, it is clear that Toyota is one of the best brands out there for making sure that a driver’s carbon footprint is as reduced as possible.

Safety

Safety is another large priority for the Toyota company. Their Safety Sense features are some of the most hi-tech on the market, equipping their vehicles with state-of-the-art nearby vehicle detectors, backup cameras, airbags, and more. The company spends over $1 million every hour researching and developing new safety procedures for each of their vehicles. They host teen driving safety initiatives and partner with national, regional, and local organizations that focus on driving safety.
