Subaru Legacy Brief History
Subaru Legacy was launched as a midsize car in 1989. It was marketed as Subaru Liberty in the Australian market. It became popular because of its traditional boxer engine and standard all-wheel drive. The company stopped producing Legacy in Japan in June 2020 and was replaced by Levorg.
Evolution of Subaru Legacy
Subaru has launched seven generations of Subaru Legacy since 1989.
First Generation (1989-1993)
The first generation was launched as a 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon. It came with a turbocharged EJ22T closed-deck block engine. The buyers could choose between a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual transmission. It was launched with driver’s side airbags and the company started offering the passenger-side airbags in 1992.
Second Generation (1994-1998)
The second generation came with some advanced features like heated leather/cloth seats and a glass moonroof. It was available with a 2.0L and a 2.5L turbocharged engine. It came standard as an all-wheel drive.
Third Generation (1999-2003)
The third generation was launched with two engine options including an EZ30 flat-6 engine and a 3.0L H6 engine. It was compatible with California’s emission standards. The Japanese market received a twin-turbo engine combined with a manual or a semiautomatic transmission.
Fourth Generation (2004-2008)
The fourth-generation was launched with two engine options including a 2.0L four-cylinder and a 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The twin-turbo setup was discontinued. It was available as a five-speed automatic transmission. This generation won several awards including the International Engine of the Year Award in 2006 and the All-Star Family Car Award by Automobile Magazine.
Fifth Generation (2009-2013)
The fifth generation came with two engine options including an EJ25 2.5L flat-4 engine and the EJ20 engine. It came standard as a 6-speed manual transmission. The EZ36 flat-6 engine was offered in several markets combined with a 5-speed or a 6-speed manual transmission.
Sixth Generation (2014-2019)
The sixth-generation was launched with a 2.5L flat-four and a 3.6L flat-six engine. It offered a range of advanced safety and tech features that weren’t available in the previous generations.
Seventh Generation (2020-Present)
The seventh-generation comes with a 2.5L four-cylinder and a 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Both the engines are combined with a continuously variable transmission. This generation introduces more advanced features to attract a larger market.
