Smart Electric Drive Brief History
Smart Electric Drive, now known as EQ, was introduced as a battery-electric variant of Smart Fortwo and Smart Forfour in 2007. It was initially introduced in London and was later marketed in 18 international markets in 2009. In 2012, the company expanded its operations to 30 international markets.
In May 2013, Smart Electric Drive reached the American and European markets.
Evolution of Smart Electric Drive
Smart has launched four generations of Smart Electric Drive since 2007.
First Generation (2007)
The first generation was powered by a 30kW electric motor that was capable of producing 41 horsepower. The motor was paired with a single-speed automatic transmission. It came with a 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery which gave it a range of up to 68 miles on a single charge.
The Smart EQ could be charged using a standard 120-volt household outlet, which took about 8 hours to fully charge the battery. It could also be charged using a 240-volt Level 2 charger, which took about 3.5 hours to fully charge the battery.
The first generation Smart EQ was a significant step forward for electric cars, particularly in the city car segment.
Second Generation (2009-2011)
The second generation was introduced to collect the customers’ opinions about Smart Electric Drive. The company had decided to launch 1,000 units of this car but ended up producing more than 2,000 units due to increased demand.
This model was introduced with two different electric motors including a 20 kW (27hp) and a 30 kW (40hp). It came with a 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The battery could be recharged within three hours.
Third Generation (2013-2016)
The third generation was introduced with a more powerful electric that was capable of delivering faster acceleration. It also came with a new lithium-ion battery pack. This model was powered by a 55 kW electric motor that was capable of producing 74 horsepower. The 17.6 kWh battery offered a driving range of 90 miles.
Moreover, it had a top speed of 78mph. The third generation was introduced with an enlarged grille opening, wider door sills, fully automatic air conditioning, daytime running lights, and more.
Fourth Generation (2017-Present)
The fourth generation was introduced with a 60 kW electric motor that can produce 82 horsepower. The electric motor is mated to a single-speed transmission. The 17.6 kWh battery pack can be recharged within 3 hours. It also offers a quick charging option. It comes with a range of safety and tech features.
