Scion tC Brief History

Scion tC History

Scion tC was introduced as a 3-door hatchback coupe in 2004 as the model year 2005. The name tC stands for “touring coupe”. It was initially introduced in the United States and later on, the company introduced this model in Canada in 2010. This was the best-selling model of Scion.

At the beginning of 2011, this model was introduced as Toyota Zelas in South America, China, and the Middle East.  The word Zelas was taken from the Italian word “zelante” which means “zealous” or “passionate”.

Evolution of Scion tC

Toyota introduced two generations of Scion tC since 2004.

First Generation (2004-2009)

Scion tC First Generation

The first generation was launched with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine. It was available as a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission. It offered a number of features like 17-inch alloy wheels, mirror-mounted turn signals, power windows, anti-lock brakes, a panoramic moonroof, cruise control, and more.

This model was introduced with a MacPherson strut front and double wishbone rear suspension system. This generation wasn’t sold in Canada. The company also introduced a Spec Package with simplified interior and exterior accessories like a urethane steering wheel finish and fixed glass roof.

It was cheaper than the standard version and it only came in four colors including Flint Mica, Classic Silver Metallic, Super White, and Black Sand Pearl. This package was discontinued in 2009. A facelift version of Scion tC was introduced in 2007 that came with new headlights and taillights and a revised grille.

The 2005 model gained a lot of appreciation for its long list of features. But it was also criticized for its limited cargo room and low headroom in the backseat.

Second Generation (2010-2016)

Scion tC Second Generation

The second generation was launched with a 2.5L four-cylinder engine. It was available as a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission. It was a toned-down variant of the Scion Fuse concept. It offered a more muscular and angular look with a revised grille, headlights, and taillights.

This generation was introduced with a performance-tuned electric power steering. It became quite popular in the tuner market. A facelift version was introduced in 2014 that came with updated headlamps, sport-tuned suspension, sport-tuned shocks, reworked faster-shifting transmission, a new touch screen, LED taillights, and more.

The facelift was primarily introduced to cope with the declining sales of this model. In 2016, the company again introduced a few minor changes like new silver interior door handles, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and a center console tray cover.
