Saturn S-Series Brief History
Saturn S-Series is a range of compact cars introduced in 1990 as the model year 1991. It was built on a Z-body platform that was developed entirely in-house at Saturn. Unlike other models of General Motors, it used a spaceframe design.
Its main selling point was the polymer panels that were dent and rust-resistant. The production of this model was discontinued in 2002.
Evolution of Saturn S-Series
Saturn Motors launched three generations of the Saturn S-Series since 1990.
First Generation (1990-1995)
The first generation was launched in three body configurations including a 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, and 5-door station wagon. It came with a 1.9L four-cylinder engine combined with a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission. It was available in three trims including SL, SL1, and SL2.
The company introduced the station wagon version of this car in 1993. In 1995, the 3-point type seatbelts replaced the power passive resistant type seatbelts. Surprisingly, its base model offered a fuel efficiency rating of 38mpg within the city and 49mpg on the highway.
Second Generation (1996-1999)
The second generation was initially launched as a 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, and 5-door station wagon. However, the two-door coupe was replaced by a 3-door coupe in 1999. The exterior was completely redesigned. It carried over the same engine options from the previous generation.
The engine was slightly upgraded in late 1999 and the company added new connecting rods, revised pistons, and new crankshaft counterweights.
Third Generation (1999-2002)
The third generation carried over the same body configurations and engine from the previous generation. The sedan was now offered with new body panels from the belt line down. The interior was completely redesigned and it came with a new center console, dashboard, and steering wheel.
It was the first Saturn that came with the Body control module (BCM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). In 2001, the company started offering side curtain airbags as an option. In 2001, the facelift version of the coupe was launched with new headlamps, tail lamps, and redesigned front and rear fascias.
