Plymouth GTX Brief History

Plymouth GTX History

Plymouth GTX was launched as a muscle car in 1966 as the model year 1967. It was initially marketed as Belvedere GTX and was later renamed Plymouth GTX. It went through several innovative changes over the years. The vehicle’s production was discontinued in 1971.

Evolution of Plymouth GTX

Plymouth has launched three generations of Plymouth GTX since 1967.

First Generation (1967)

Plymouth GTX First Generation

The first generation was launched as a 2-door hardtop and a 2-door convertible. Although it was based on Belvedere, it was distinguished by a few elements like fiber-glass simulated hood scoops, a blacked-out grille, a center console-mounted tachometer, and a chrome “pop-open” fuel filler cap.

It came with two engine options including a 7.0L V8 and a 7.2L V8. It was available as a 4-speed manual and a 3-speed automatic transmission.

Second Generation (1968-1970)

Plymouth GTX Second Generation

The second generation carried over the same body configurations and engine options from the previous generation. However, this generation was introduced with a completely new look. The previous rectilinear design was replaced by a new hourglass body. It used the Sport Satellite trim.

Its dual horizontal “racing stripes” appealed to most of the customers. GTX was introduced as a more affordable version of Road Runner. However, its sales significantly decreased when the company started offering Road Runner in a convertible body style in 1969. Therefore, GTX’s convertible model was dropped this year.

The 1970 model was introduced with a new grille and rear taillights.

Third Generation (1971)

Plymouth GTX Third Generation

The third generation was introduced as a 2-door hardtop. It came with two engine options including a 7.0L V8 and a 7.2L V8. It made a great impression with its deeply insert grille and headlights. The company started offering it as a variation of Road Runner in 1972 and it was renamed Plymouth Road Runner GTX.
