Nissan Sentra Brief History

Nissan Sentra history

Nissan Sentra was launched as a replacement for economical B210 in 1982. It was the first Nissan vehicle to use a front-wheel-drive layout and a front-engine. Based on its high safety ratings and low fuel consumption, it immediately became an attractive choice for most car lovers.

It was initially launched as a subcompact and was reclassified as a compact car in 2000. It’s also marketed as Nissan Sunny, Nissan Pulsar, Nissan Sylphy, and Nissan Tsuru in different markets.

Evolution of Nissan Sentra

Nissan has launched 8 generations of Nissan Sentra with innovative changes in the interior and exterior.

First Generation (1982-1986)

Nissan Sentra first generation

First-generation was launched with a standard 1.5L four-cylinder engine with the ability to produce 67-horsepower. A 1.6L four-cylinder engine was also offered as an option. The users could choose between a five-speed manual and a three-speed automatic transmission.

It was offered as a 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon, and a 3-door hatchback coupe in different markets. But in the US, it was only manufactured as a 2-door sedan.

Second Generation (1987-1990)

Nissan Sentra second generation

The second generation was launched with a 1.6L four-cylinder engine combined with a five-speed manual transmission. This time a 3-door hatchback joined the lineup in the US. In 1989, the company made several changes to the interior and exterior.

Third Generation (1991-1994)

The third generation was launched with a 1.6L four-cylinder with the ability to produce 110-horsepower. It was available in four trims including E, XE, SE, and GXE. This time it was only offered as a two-door coupe and a four-door sedan. The users could now choose between a 4/5-speed manual transmission or a 3/4-speed automatic transmission.

In 1992, a value option package was offered with features like cruise control, air conditioning, and a stereo system.

Fourth Generation (1995-1999)

Nissan Sentra fourth generation

Fourth-generation was launched with a 1.6L four-cylinder engine with the ability to produce 115-horsepower. This generation was only offered as a sedan and the coupe variant was dropped.
