Nissan Murano Brief History

Nissan Murano history

The word Murano is derived from the Italian city of Murano.

Nissan Murano was Nissan’s first crossover SUV launched in the United States in 2002. It was based on the Nissan FF-L platform and it was Nissan’s only crossover SUV in the United States until September 2007. Murano is positioned between Pathfinder and Xterra (now replaced by Rogue). Its convertible variant, Murano CrossCabriolet, was a great addition to the lineup that was launched in 2011.

Evolution of Nissan Murano

Over the years, Nissan has launched three generations of Nissan Murano with several innovative features.

First Generation (2002-2007)

Nissan Murano first generation

The first generation was launched with a 3.5L engine combined with a continuously variable transmission that could produce 245-horsepower. It was designed with plenty of safety features including a steel-reinforced cabin, head restraints, and a full set of airbags.

In 2006, LED taillamps and turn signals were added to the vehicle. A low-volume, performance-oriented version of the Nissan Murano was launched in Europe with revised suspension, bigger brakes, and exterior styling.

Second Generation (2008-2014)

Nissan Murano second generation

The second generation was launched with a 3.5-liter VQ35DE V6 engine combined with a continuously variable transmission with the ability to produce 260-horsepower. The users could also opt for a 6-speed automatic transmission according to their preferences.

It came with several advanced features including power fold-up rear seats, double-stitched leather seats, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The company also launched a 2-door convertible edition. It was available in three trim levels including S, SL, and LE.

The base variants were offered as a front-wheel-drive whereas the top of the line variant was available as an all-wheel drive. The convertible was only offered in the LE trim.

Third Generation (2015-Present)

Nissan Murano third generation

The third-generation Murano is launched with the same engine specs. The hybrid variant was also launched in 2016. In 2019, several updates were made including semi-aniline quilted leather-appointed seats, a new wheel design, and front and rear fascia were also updated.
