Mercury Grand Marquis was introduced as a large-size sedan in 1975. It was initially introduced as the premium variant of the Mercury Marquis lineup and was later offered as a standalone vehicle in 1983. It shared its platform with the Ford Crown Victoria and the Lincoln Town Car.
Its manufacturing unit was established at St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Southwold, Ontario, Canada, and the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri. The vehicle was discontinued in 2011.

First Generation (1975-1991)
The first generation was launched as a 2-door hardtop/2-door sedan, a 4-door pillared hardtop/4-door sedan, and a 5-door station wagon. It came with a 4.9L V8 and a 5.8L V8 engine. It was available as a 4-speed automatic transmission.
