McLaren is traditionally known for its involvement in the racing scene. The company has found its place in making cars for both racing and the luxury automotive market, remaining an exclusive brand for customers. In this article, you’ll learn about the history of McLaren, its sales, and available models.

How the Company Got Started

Bruce McLaren, the founder of the McLaren company, developed an interest in racing cars early on in life. He came from New Zealand to the United Kingdom in 1958 to pursue his dream of being a professional racer, eventually creating the McLaren Motor Racing in 1963. Originally, the company solely created race cars. Becoming famous for winning the Grand Prix multiple times, along with the Le Mans 24 hours race, McLaren had developed a reputation for excelling at “innovating and developing racing cars.”

By the mid-late 1960s, the company had released two sports cars, the M1A and M1B – both went down in automotive and racing history. In 1967, McLaren took the first company title in racing by winning several races. After racing in the United Kingdom for almost a decade, McLaren came to the United States and continued to experience success on the racetrack. According to their website, they have won 43 race titles in their almost 70-year history, including:

  • 3 Indy 500 titles
  • 1 Le Mans 24 hour race title
  • Many more F5000 and Formula A races

The Logo

The McLaren logo has undergone several changes since its creation in 1963. Originally formatted as a crest, the first logo featured a black kiwi bird which paid homage to Bruce McLaren’s native country – New Zealand. Moving to a more modern image, the company changed to a racing-themed logo in 1981 with the addition of a checkered pattern above the phrase “McLaren INTERNATIONAL” written in a boldly typed font. A decade later, they simplified the logo by having a simple arched figure above the “N” in the Mclaren name. Finally, the logo was redesigned in 2012 to feature a black and silver color scheme with the name of the company.

Sales

McLaren, like many luxury car brands, promotes itself as an exclusive brand. Their sales reflect this, as they only make a certain amount of vehicles per year to release to the general public for sale. According to Car Figures, the company has had an increase in sales in recent years, selling 2,286 units in 2019 and 1,267 in 2020. This shows that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, sales remained strong for the company – a unique accomplishment in the current automotive market.
