Lexus RX Brief History
Lexus RX was launched as a luxury crossover SUV in 1997 as the model year 1998. In the Japanese market, it was launched under the nameplate Toyota Harrier in 1997. It was the first luxury crossover SUV launched by Lexus. Its first generation was launched as a compact SUV while the remaining three generations were launched as midsize SUVs.
It’s positioned between Lexus NX and Lexus LX. RX stands for “Radiant Crossover”. However, some people claim that it’s an abbreviation of “Recreational Cross Country”.
Evolution of Lexus RX
Lexus has launched five generations of Lexus RX since 1998.
First Generation (1998-2002)
The first generation was launched with three engine options including a 2.2L inline-four, a 2.4L inline-four, and a 3.0L V6 engine. It was available as a 4-speed automatic transmission. A new version was launched in 2000 with revised headlights and taillights. The high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps were also added.
Second Generation (2003-2007)
The second generation was launched with four engine options including a 2.4L inline-four, 3.0L V6, 3.3L V6, and a 3.5L V6 engine. It was available as a 5-speed automatic transmission. A revised version was launched in 2007 with new seven-spoke 18-in alloy wheels, a revised grille, and chrome door handles.
Third Generation (2008-2014)
The third generation was launched with a 2.7L inline-four and a 3.5L V6 engine. A 3.5L V6 hybrid gasoline engine was also introduced in a few markets. It was available as a 6-speed/8-speed automatic transmission.
A facelift version was launched in 2012 with a new grille, interior colors, new wheels, and new head and taillamps. New LED daytime running lamps were also introduced with the facelift version.
Fourth Generation (2015-2021)
The fourth-generation was launched with a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.5L V6 engine. A 3.5L V6 gasoline hybrid variant was again launched in a few markets. The gasoline variants were available as a 6- and 8-speed automatic transmission whereas the hybrid gasoline variant was mated with an eCVT.
Fifth Generation (2022-Present)
The fifth-generation comes with a 3.5L V6 engine. It’s based on the GA-K platform and comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It offers a number of advanced safety and tech features.
