Lexus GX Brief History
Lexus GX was launched as a full-size 5-door luxury SUV in 2002 as the model year 2003. It derives its off-road capability from Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. It was the third luxury SUV introduced by Lexus. Its production unit is established at Tahara Plant in Japan. It’s positioned between Lexus RX and Lexus LX.
Evolution of Lexus GX
Lexus has launched two generations of Lexus GX since 2002.
First Generation (2002-2008)
Lexus GX was designed by Shoichi Fujiyoshi. It shared its suspension layout with Toyota 4Runner while adding Downhill Assist Control and Adaptive Variable Suspension. It was launched with a 4.7L V8 engine combined with a 5-speed automatic transmission that could produce 235 horsepower.
It had a maximum towing capacity of 5,000lbs. It offered seating for eight passengers and a side-opening rear tailgate as standard. In 2005, the engine’s capacity was increased by 35-hp and it started producing 270 horsepower.
In 2007, the overall style was updated including liquid graphite wheels, revised turn signal lights, dark metallic grille, and interior and exterior chrome.
Second Generation (2009-Present)
The second generation was launched with body-on-frame construction, Torsen center locking differential, electronically controlled hi-lo transfer case, and full-time four-wheel drive. It came with a 4.6L V8 engine combined with a six-speed automatic transmission that produces 301 horsepower.
It can accommodate up to seven passengers. However, its cargo capacity declined compared to the previous generation. It came with advanced safety features including lane departure warning system, Driver Monitoring System, and Pre-collision System.
It received its first facelift in September 2013 with several updates including spindle grille design, LED Fog Lamps, LED daytime running lights, and LED headlamps. The company started offering the second-row captain chairs with the luxury model in 2016.
The second facelift was introduced in 2019 with a redesigned spindle grille along with new triple-beam LED headlamps. A multi-terrain monitor, a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, a fuel tank protector, a transmission cooler, and several other features were offered with a new Off-road package.
