Lexus ES Brief History
Lexus ES is a series of Midsize Executive Cars that was launched in 1989. It was initially based on the Toyota Camry platform. However, the company started using the Toyota Avalon platform in 2012. A gasoline-electric hybrid version of Lexus ES was also launched in 2012. ES stands for “Executive Sedan”. However, some say that it’s an abbreviation of “Elegant Sedan”.
Evolution of Lexus ES
Lexus has launched seven generations of Lexus ES since 1989.
First Generation (1989-1990)
The first generation was launched as a four-door hardtop sedan. It came with a 2.5L V6 engine. It was available as a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Second Generation (1991-1995)
The second generation was launched with the same body configuration. However, it came with a 2.5L V6 and a 3.0L V6 engine. It was available as a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Third Generation (1996-2000)
The third generation carried over the engine options from the previous generation. It was available as a 4-speed automatic transmission. It came with a number of standard luxury features including heated seats, an in-glove box-mounted CD changer, and heated side mirrors.
Fourth Generation (2001-2005)
The fourth-generation was launched as a four-door sedan. It came with two engine options including a 3.0L V6 and a 3.3L V6 engine. It was available as a 5-speed automatic transmission. A revised version was launched in 2003 with interior upgrades, Mark Levinson Audio, 17-in Y-spoke alloy wheels
Fifth Generation (2006-2011)
The fifth generation was launched with two engine options including a 2.4L inline-four and a 3.5L V6 engine. It was available as a 6-speed automatic transmission. It came with new features including a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, radar-based adaptive cruise control, sonar-based warning system, and power seat cushion extender.
A mid-cycle facelift version was launched in 2009 with new split 5-spoke alloy wheels, chrome-trimmed side molding, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
Sixth Generation (2012-2017)
The sixth generation was launched with a 2.0L inline-four and a 3.5L V6 engine. A 2.0L four-cylinder hybrid variant was also added to the lineup. The gasoline engines were available as a 6-speed automatic transmission while the hybrid engine eCVT.
Seventh Generation (2018-Present)
The seventh generation was launched with a 2.5L four-cylinder and a 3.5L V6 engine. It’s available as an 8-speed automatic transmission. It offers a range of advanced tech and safety features.
