Jeep Cherokee Brief History
Jeep Cherokee was named after the Cherokee tribe of North American Indians. It was launched as a full-size SUV in 1974. And it eventually became a compact crossover SUV over the years.
Evolution of Jeep Cherokee
Jeep has launched five generations of Jeep Cherokee since 1974.
First Generation (1974-1983)
The first generation was a two-door station wagon launched as a replacement for Jeepster Commando. It was particularly targeted toward young buyers. The four-door SUV joined the lineup in 1977. It was available in 8 trims including S, Chief, Golden Eagle, Golden Hawk, Limited, Classic Sport, Pioneer, and Laredo.
Second Generation (1984-2001)
The second-generation Cherokee featured a lightweight unibody design instead of a traditional body-on-frame chassis. This generation proved to be a game-changer as it started replacing regular cars.
Third Generation (2002-2007)
The third generation was marketed as Jeep Liberty in North America. However, it was marketed as Jeep Cherokee outside the North American Market. It was the first Jeep vehicle to use rack and pinion steering. It was available with a 2.4L four-cylinder and 3.7L V6 engines.
Fourth Generation (2008-2013)
The four-cylinder engine was dropped and the V6 was the only engine option available. And because of the strict emission standards, the Cherokee’s CRD was discontinued in the American Market. The users could choose between a six-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission
Fifth Generation (2014-Present)
The fifth generation was launched as a compact crossover SUV with three engine options including a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder, 3.2L V6, and 2.4L inline-four. This generation offered more tech and safety features compared to its predecessors.
