How the Company Got Started

Founded in 1922 as the “Swallow Sidecar Company,” the company that would eventually become known as Jaguar evolved quickly to become one of the world’s leading luxury brands. The founders were William Lyons and William Walmsley. After 20 years of operating under the Swallow Sidecar Company brand, the company switched to the name Jaguar in 1945 in order to not be confused with any other international companies.

Originally selling motor panels, the company operated as a steel manufacturer for several years. The first few vehicles that were produced did not emerge until 1948. After that, the models XK120, XK140, XK150, and the E-Type were created. The company operated with several slogans at the time, all of which embodied things like the lustrous exteriors and interiors they were known for.

By the 1950s, Jaguar had made history in other areas besides creating unique luxury vehicles. They had become involved in the racing scene; a Jaguar vehicle won the Le Mans 24 hours race twice – in 1951 and 1953.

In 1965, the company was merged with the British Motor Company (which underwent several name changes in a short period) due to financial concerns. However, this did not last forever. By 1984, the company was independent again but to no avail. The mid-late 1980s brought  some tumultuous times to the company, leading them to be purchased by the Ford Motor Company in 1989. In 2008, the company once again was sold to Tata Motors and merged with Land Rover, another British motor company.

Influence of Other Companies

Jaguar is owned by Tata of India, which also owns the Land Rover company. Both of these companies used to be owned by Ford Premium Auto Group. Because these two companies often work together, they have a strong customer base that helps to drive up sales.

The Logo

Jaguar Logo HistoryThe Jaguar logo was originally much different from the one that the world is familiar with today. In 1922, the first logo featured a blue circle with the words “Swallow Sidecar Company,” which was the name of the first organization that Jaguar cars were created under. In 1945, the logo was changed to feature “Jaguar” and a depiction of the jaguar animal. Since then, the logo has been slightly altered but has stayed true to its sleek and classic look by featuring a total chrome look. In 2012, the logo was finalized to its most recent one – a more muscular-figured jaguar with a broader chrome font.

Sales

According to CarSalesBase, Jaguar has sold slightly over 580,000 vehicles in the United States since 2000. Their sales peaked in the late 90s, reaching the highest they had ever been. At the highest, the company was selling over 60,000 vehicles per year. These sales rivaled the growth percentages seen in the late 1940s, when the company saw up to almost 500% growth. Aside from these high peaks, Jaguar had consistently seen smaller fluctuations throughout the decades, as well. Overall, the company has done extremely well since they were introduced to the market.
