Hyundai Sonata Brief History
Hyundai Sonata was launched as a facelift version of Hyundai Stellar in 1985. It was initially available in South Korea and was later exported to global markets in 1988. It’s named after the musical term Sonata. Its manufacturing unit is now established in the United States and several other markets like South Korea, China, and Russia.
Evolution of Hyundai Sonata
Hyundai has launched eight generations of Hyundai Sonata with several innovative changes.
First Generation (1985-1987)
The first generation was launched as a 4-door sedan with engine options including a 1.5L four-cylinder and a 1.8L four-cylinder. It was available with a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission. It came with a number of luxurious features with a reasonable price tag.
Second Generation (1988-1992)

Fourth Generation (1998-2003)
The fourth generation was launched with two engine options including a 2.0L four-cylinder and a 2.5L four-cylinder. It came with an independent, multi-link rear suspension and double-wishbone front suspension. It shared its underpinnings with first-generation Hyundai Santa Fe and Hyundai Trajet. A facelift version was launched with a strengthened body shell and firewall in 2001.
Fifth Generation (2004-2008)
The fifth generation was launched with three engine options including a 2.0L four-cylinder, a 2.4L four-cylinder, and a 3.3L V6 engine. This generation was slightly longer and wider than the previous model. A facelift version was introduced in 2008 with improved styling and advanced features.
Sixth Generation (2009-2013)
The sixth generation was launched with three engine options including a 2.0L four-cylinder, 2.4L four-cylinder, and a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder. A facelift version was introduced in 2012 with several exterior upgrades including slimmer LED mirror indicators, redesigned LED Taillights, New Alloy Wheel Design, and LED Daytime Running Lights.
Seventh Generation (2014-2018)
The seventh generation was launched with the same engine options and it was available with a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, and 8-speed automatic transmission. In 2017, a facelift version was launched with exterior upgrades including new headlights, cascading grille, taillights, and vertical LED lighting.
Eighth Generation (2019-Present)
The eighth-generation Sonata comes with three engine options including a 2.5L four-cylinder, 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder, and 2.5L turbocharged four-cylinder. It comes with an 8-speed automatic and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
