Hyundai Elantra Brief History
Hyundai Elantra, aka Hyundai Avante, was launched as a compact car in 1990. In Australia and some European markets, it was launched under the name Lantra to avoid using a similar name to Mitsubishi Magna Elante. Similarly, the name Avante wasn’t used in some markets to avoid having a similarity with Audi Avant. In 2001, the company decided to use the universal name “Elantra” for this vehicle.
Evolution of Hyundai Elantra
Hyundai has launched seven generations of Hyundai Elantra since 1990.
First Generation J1 (1990-1994)
The first generation was launched as a 4-door sedan with three engine options including a 1.5L four-cylinder, 1.6L four-cylinder, and 1.8L four-cylinder. It was available as a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic transmission.
Second Generation J2/RD (1995-1999)
The second generation was launched as a 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon. It was launched with four engine options including 1.5L four-cylinder, 1.6L four-cylinder, 1.8L four-cylinder, and 2.0-L four-cylinder. The company also introduced a 1.9L four-cylinder diesel engine for better fuel economy.
Third Generation XD (2000-2005)

It was available with four gas engine options including 1.5L four-cylinder, 1.6L four-cylinder, 1.8L four-cylinder, and 2.0L four-cylinder. This generation was also available with two diesel engines including a 1.5L four-cylinder and a 2.0L four-cylinder.
Fourth Generation HD (2006-2009)
The fourth generation was only available as a 4-door sedan. It was available with three gas engines including 1.6L four-cylinder, 1.8L four-cylinder, and 2.0L four-cylinder. And a 1.6L turbodiesel four-cylinder engine was also offered. This time the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) was also made available.
Fifth Generation MD/UD (2010-2014)
The fifth generation was available as a 4-door sedan and a 2-door coupe. It came with three gas engines including a 1.6L four-cylinder, 1.8L four-cylinder, and 2.0L four-cylinder. It was available with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Sixth Generation AD (2015-2019)
The sixth generation was launched as a 4-door sedan and it came with three gas engines including a 1.4L four-cylinder, 1.6L four-cylinder, and 2.0L four-cylinder. This time, the company again offered a 1.6L four-cylinder diesel engine following the customers’ demands. It was available with a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, and a continuously variable transmission.
Seventh Generation CN7 (2020-Present)
The seventh generation is available as a 4-door sedan and it comes with three engine options including a 2.0L four-cylinder, and a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder, 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder. The buyers can choose between a 6-speed manual, 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, 8-speed dual-clutch automatic, and a continuously variable transmission.
