Hyundai Elantra, aka Hyundai Avante, was launched as a compact car in 1990. In Australia and some European markets, it was launched under the name Lantra to avoid using a similar name to Mitsubishi Magna Elante. Similarly, the name Avante wasn’t used in some markets to avoid having a similarity with Audi Avant. In 2001, the company decided to use the universal name “Elantra” for this vehicle.
