Hummer has had a long history of creating military-inspired vehicles for the everyday driver. After being discontinued in 2010, Hummer vehicles are making a comeback under GMC. In this article, you will learn about the history of Hummer, what models will be available in 2022, and more.

How the Company Got Started

Starting out as military vehicles, Hummers, or Humvees as they were nicknamed, were originally made to assist troops in carrying cargo during military operations. AM General Corporation received a large grant from the United States government to create these vehicles. They became so popular that in 1992, a street version was released. However, they weren’t the most fuel efficient or functional vehicles to drive on the road. Hummers were extremely popular among celebrities and the rich and famous, which helped the company gain notoriety quickly.

Although several models were released to make them more approachable and affordable, they never achieved the success that manufacturers hoped. In 2008, the company had to stop producing Hummers due to the U.S. economic crisis and lessened demands. However, in 2020, the company began producing Hummer vehicles again. The new line has not been released yet, but customers can reserve them now.

The Logo

Hummer Logo History

The Hummer logo has essentially remained the same since its creation in 1992. Originally featuring a very bold, black font, the logo was changed in 2021 to a slimmer, more mechanical font when the company began re-releasing models.

Sales

Hummer had a slow start to their sales growth, but quickly expanded once 2005 hit. They jumped from selling 208 units per year to over 1,000. According to CarSalesBase, the company sold 4,266 units between 2003 and 2013. As the economic crisis began to significantly impact the automotive industry, their sales dropped almost immediately. While the vehicles were appealing, they were not efficient for a spiraling economy.

Most Popular Model

The most popular selling model for Hummer was the H3, a model released as a push to make Hummer vehicles more affordable. This vehicle was meant to be more for the average driver, despite its exterior. It had the best fuel efficiency of all the Hummer models, especially compared to the much larger H2. While the H2 was popular in its own rite, it still did not garner as much popularity as auto manufacturers hoped it would.

The new electrified Hummer models are expected to do fairly well in the automotive market because of the push to be more sustainable. In fact, the Detroit Free Press reports that the first GMC Hummer EV from the 2022 lineup sold in auction for $2.5 million. The money raised from the auction will go to an organization called the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, which honors a firefighter that passed away on September 11, 2001.

Geographic Popularity

All Hummer models are made in the United States and exported to various countries that sell them. After seeing some success in the North American market, Hummers were sold in Europe. However, because the vehicles were so large, they were not compatible with the small, winding roads that are found in many European countries. Their lack of fuel efficiency and overall environmental impact was also a concern for many, causing them to not be as successful as anticipated. They were pulled from the European market in 2008, facing a similar trajectory as seen in the U.S.

Sustainability

When you think of sustainability, Hummer vehicles are probably the last model of car that comes to mind. Despite their past reputation for not being a sustainable or economically-friendly vehicle, Hummer is making significant changes to alter this image. With the new release of the electric vehicle, the company is hoping to make a better impact on the world. Their new line includes an SUV and a pickup truck, both of which are all electric.

Despite these efforts, the internet is still concerned about just how sustainable these vehicles actually are. An article on Grist calls the new model “ginormous” and an “oxymoron.” Because of its high price tag, large size, and heavy weight, people are arguing that there is no possible way that the company can feasibly be eco-friendly.
