Geo Tracker Brief History

Geo Tracker History

Geo Tracker was introduced as a compact SUV in 1989 in the Japanese market. The Tracker was based on the Suzuki Sidekick, a similar vehicle produced by the Japanese automaker Suzuki. Geo Tracker was rebranded as the Chevrolet Tracker in 1998 because General Motors discontinued the Geo brand in 1997.

The Tracker was popular among outdoor enthusiasts and off-road enthusiasts due to its small size and rugged capabilities. It was also a popular choice for those who were looking for an affordable and fuel-efficient SUV. The production of this vehicle was discontinued in 2004.

Evolution of Geo Tracker

Two generations of Geo Tracker were launched over the years. The first generation was launched by Geo whereas the second generation was launched by Chevrolet.

First Generation (1989-1997)

Geo Tracker First Generation

The first generation Geo Tracker was based on the Suzuki Sidekick and featured a two-door convertible or hardtop body style. The body was made of lightweight materials such as fiberglass and plastic, and the car had a high ground clearance and short overhangs, making it ideal for off-road adventures.

It came with a 1.6L four-cylinder engine combined with a 5-speed manual transmission. The company also offered a 3-speed automatic transmission in a few select markets.

It featured a part-time 4-wheel drive system with a manual locking hub. This allowed the driver to shift between 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive as needed, depending on the driving conditions. It offered a few standard features such as an air conditioning system, manually adjustable seats, and a cassette player.

It offered minimal safety features including a driver-side airbag and anti-lock braking system.

Second Generation (1998-2004)

Geo Tracker Second Generation

The second generation was introduced as Chevrolet Vitaran in the American and Mexican markets. The Sidekick was discontinued and this new generation was based on Suzuki Vitara. This model was launched with three engine options including a 1.6L four-cylinder, a 2.0L four-cylinder, and a 2.5L four-cylinder engine.

It was available as a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission.
