Ford Fiesta Brief History
Ford Fiesta was launched in 1976 but it reached the American market in 2008 when the company introduced this vehicle worldwide. Henry Ford II personally selected the name Fiesta based on the vehicle’s association with the Mediterannean. Over the years, Fiesta has successfully maintained its position as the best subcompact car.
Evolution of Ford Fiesta
Ford has launched 7 generations of Ford Fiesta with several innovative changes.
First Generation (1976-1982)
First-generation Fiesta was launched as a 3-door hatchback and a 3-door panel van with a Valencia 957cc inline-four engine. It was available in 7 trim levels including Base, Popular, Popular Plus, L, GL, Ghia, and S. This model was marketed in Europe. The US model was available as Base, Decor, Sport, and Ghia.
Second Generation (1983-1988)
A compound valve-angle hemispherical combustion chamber replaced the 1.3L OHV engine in 1983 which was later replaced by a 1.4L engine in 1985. The new CTX Continuously Variable Transmission was also integrated in 1987. This generation was available in four trim levels including Popular, Popular Plus, L, Ghia, 1.4S, and XR2.
Third Generation (1989-1994)
The third generation was launched as a 3/5-door Hatchback and a 3-door panel van. This time, the company launched a 1.8L diesel engine with other petrol engines. In 1989, the company launched the sports model XR2i with an Eight Valve CVH engine which was later replaced by a Zetec 16-valve version in 1992.
Fourth Generation (1995-2001)
This time the company added a 4-door Sedan to the lineup. Significant changes were made to the interior and exterior. It was launched with 1.25L, 1.4L petrol engines, and a 1.8L Diesel engine.
Fifth Generation (2002-2007)
Fifth-generation was available in five trim levels including Finesse, LX, Zetec, Ghia, and Limited-Edition. It was the first generation launched with passenger airbags and an antilock braking system. It was ergonomically and mechanically more advanced than its predecessors.
Sixth Generation (2008-2016)
The sixth generation was launched under the company’s new “One Ford” strategy. In 2013, the company launched a facelift version incorporating Ford’s latest corporate front end. It was the first generation launched with a newly introduced trapezoidal grille.
Seventh Generation (2017)
The seventh-generation Fiesta was bigger, roomier, and safer than its predecessors. This time, the company launched a crossover-styled variant, Fiesta Active, and the luxury Fiesta Vignale for a better experience. Ford Fiesta has been discontinued in the USA due to the increasing popularity of SUVs.
Ford Fiesta ST (2018-Present)
