Chevrolet Malibu Brief History
Chevrolet Malibu is named after the coastal community of Malibu, California. It was launched as a trim level of the Chevrolet Chevelle in 1964. It was independently marketed under the Chevrolet Malibu nameplate since 1978. Its production was discontinued in 1983 and it was revived in 1997.
Malibu is now the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S because Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Impala, and Chevrolet Sonic were discontinued in 2020.
Evolution of Chevrolet Malibu
Chevrolet has launched 9 generations of Chevrolet Malibu since its launch in 1964.
First Generation (1964-1967)
The first generation was launched as the top trim of the Chevrolet Chevelle in 1964. It was available in three body styles including a 4-door sedan, a 2-door hardtop, and a 2-door convertible Station Wagon. It was available with a 5.4L V8 engine that could produce 300-horsepower.
Second Generation (1968-1972)
The second generation was launched with the same body styles but it came with a 5.0L V8 engine. It offered several advanced features including carpeted lower door panels, a center console, upgraded vinyl/cloth bench seats, and woodgrain trim on the dashboard and door panels.
Third Generation (1973-1977)
Chevrolet Malibu was initially launched as the mid-range variant of the Chevrolet Chevelle but it became the entry-level variant in 1974 when the base variant was dropped. The top-of-the-line variant was also replaced by Malibu Classic. It was offered with an inline-six 250 CID engine.
Fourth Generation (1978-1983)
The fourth-generation was independently launched under the Chevrolet Malibu nameplate. It was available as a 2-door coupe, a 4-door sedan, and a 5-door station wagon. It offered three engine options including a 3.3L V6, a 3.8L V6, and a 5.0L V8. The users could choose between a 3/4-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic transmission.
Fifth Generation (1997-2003)
The fifth-generation was launched as a 4-door sedan and it came with three engine options including a 2.2L inline-four, 2.4L inline-four, and 3.1L V6. All engine options were combined with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Sixth Generation (2004-2007)
The sixth-generation was launched as a 4-door sedan and a 5-door hatchback. It was available with three engine options including a 2.2L inline-four, 3.5L V6, and a 3.9L V6 engine. All engines were equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission
Seventh Generation (2008-2012)
The hatchback was dropped and it was only launched as a 4-door sedan. It was launched with three engine options including a 2.4L inline-four, 3.5L V6, and 3.6L V6. The company also offered a 2.4L hybrid gasoline engine for better fuel economy. The users could choose between a 4-speed automatic and 6-speed automatic transmission.
Eighth Generation (2013-2015)
The eighth-generation was launched with six engine options including a 1.5L turbo inline-four, a 1.6L turbo inline-four, a 2.0L turbo inline-four, a 2.4L inline-four hybrid, and a 2.5L inline-four, and a 3.0L V6. All engines were combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Ninth Generation (2016-Present)
The ninth generation was initially launched with three engine options including a 1.5L turbo four-cylinder, 1.8L four-cylinder, and 2.0L turbo four-cylinder. However, the 1.8L engine was later discontinued due to lack of demand. The users can choose between a 9-speed automatic and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
