Chevrolet Equinox Brief History
Chevrolet Equinox was launched as a mid-size SUV in 2004 for the model year 2005. And it was the first-ever SUV made by Chevrolet to compete with Hyundai Senta Fe, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4. The assembly plant was initially established in Ingersoll, Ontario but it later expanded to Tennessee, Ramos Arizpe, Spring Hill, Wuhan, Incheon, South Korea, and Coahuila.
Evolution of Chevrolet Equinox
Chevrolet has launched 3 generations of Chevrolet Equinox with several innovative updates.
First Generation (2005-2009)
The first generation was based on the GM Theta platform. It was offered with a 3.4L V6 and 3.6L V6 engine combined with a 5-speed automatic and 6-speed automatic transmission respectively. Pontiac Torrent also shares its mechanicals and body structure with Chevy Equinox and it was launched in 2005. However, its front and rear styling is slightly different.
The company also introduced the sports variants for Equinox and Torrent in 2008 with a 3.6L V6 engine. Furthermore, a premium variant, Equinox LTZ, also joined the LS and LT variants in 2008.
Second Generation (2010-2017)
The second generation was offered with three engine options including a 2.4L inline-four engine, a 3.0L V6 engine, and a 3.6L V6 engine. All engine options were mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This generation offered better fuel economy because it came with upgraded gasoline direct injection engines.
In 2013, the 3.6L V6 engine replaced the 3.0L engine in LT and LTZ models. It also came with several tech and safety upgrades this year.
Third Generation (2018-Present)
The third generation was launched as a compact crossover SUV and its previous position was taken by Chevrolet Blazer. It was offered with three engine options including a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 2.0L four-cylinder engine, and a 1.6L turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine.
These engines were offered with a 6-speed automatic and a 9-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0L engine was discontinued in 2021 due to the lack of demand. It was offered in four trims including L, LS, LT, and Premium. In 2022, a facelift version was launched and the RS variant joined the lineup while the L variant was dropped.
