BMW 7 Series Brief History
BMW 7 Series was launched as a successor to BMW E3 in 1977. It’s the flagship vehicle of BMW. The company introduces exterior changes and technologies on this model before other models of BMW. It was initially launched with a straight-six engine. And the company later introduced the four-cylinder, inline-six, V8, and V12 engines. Alpina B7 is the high-end variant of this model.
Evolution of BMW 7 Series
BMW has launched seven generations of BMW 7 Series since 1977.
First Generation (1977-1985)
The first generation was launched as a 4-door sedan and came with a six-cylinder engine. The company introduced a turbocharged six-cylinder engine in 1983. BMW 7 Series came with several electronic features including a service interval indicator, an onboard computer, and a check control panel.
It was the first BMW launched with a driver’s airbag, anti-lock braking system, and double-link front suspension.
Second Generation (1986-1993)
The second generation was initially launched with a straight-six and a V12 engine. The company introduced the V8 engines in 1992. It came with several advanced features including Electronic Damper Control, dual-zone climate control, the CAN bus electronic protocol, traction control, and Xenon headlamps.
Third Generation (1994-2000)
The third generation was launched with a range of straight-six, V8, and V12 engines. The company also introduced a turbocharged straight-six diesel engine for better performance. Later on, a twin-turbo V8 diesel engine was also added to the lineup in 1999. It was the first BMW to offer an in-built television and it was the first car introduced with curtain airbags.
Fourth Generation (2001-2008)
The fourth generation was the first BMW to include an iDrive, a 6-speed automatic transmission, night vision, a “flame-surfacing” exterior, an electronic smart Key, and active anti-roll bars.
Fifth Generation (2009-2014)
The fifth generation was the first BMW launched with a hybrid powertrain. It became popular with its turbocharged V12 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It was the first model launched with a turbocharged petrol engine and all-wheel drive.
Sixth Generation (2015-2021)
The sixth generation was based on the modular OKL platform. It used the carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer as structural chassis components. The company introduced plug-in hybrid variants to target a bigger market. A facelift version was launched in 2019 with several interior and exterior upgrades.
Seventh Generation (2022-Present)
The seventh generation is launched with a range of 3.0L turbocharged V6 and 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engines.
