BMW 3 Series Brief History
BMW 3 Series is a range of compact executive cars introduced in 1975. It was introduced as a successor to the 02 Series. It was initially introduced as a 2-door Saloon but the company has introduced several body configurations over the years such as 2-door coupe, 2-door convertible, 4-door Saloon, 5-door liftback, 5-door estate, and 3-door hatchback.
The coupe and convertible models were moved to the 4 Series in 2013. So, the BMW 3 Series doesn’t have these configurations anymore. BMW 3 Series accounts for around 30% of the total annual sales of BMW. Thus, it’s known as the best-selling model of BMW.
Evolution of BMW 3 Series
BMW has launched three generations of BMW 3 Series since 1975.
First Generation (1975-1981)
The first generation was a 2-door sedan that replaced the 02 Series. It was initially introduced with carburated four-cylinder engines but the company introduced the fuel-injected models by the end of 1975. Furthermore, the six-cylinder engines were added to the lineup in 1977. Also, a Cabriolet body style was introduced in 1978.
Second Generation (1982-1989)
Second generation was initially launched as a 2-door sedan but the company introduced the 4-door sedan model in 1983. Moreover, the convertible was launched in 1985 and the estate models were introduced in 1987.
Third Generation (1990-1996)
The third generation was available in five body styles including sedan, convertible, coupe, hatchback, and wagon. It was introduced with a multi-link rear suspension. It was available as a 5-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual transmission.
Fourth Generation (1997-2003)
The fourth generation carried over the same body styles from the previous generation. It came with a number of advanced electronic features including electronic brake-force distribution, LED taillights, satellite navigation, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.
It was available as a 6-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual transmission.
Fifth Generation (2004-2010)
The fifth generation was launched in four body styles including sedan, coupe, wagon, and cabriolet. The turbocharged gasoline engine was introduced in 2006. The top-of-the-line variant was powered by the BMW S65 V8 engine.
Sixth Generation (2011-2017)
The sixth generation was launched in five body styles including sedan, convertible, coupe, station wagon, and a five-door hatchback. The coupe and convertible models were moved to the 4 Series in 2013. This generation was launched with a range of turbocharged powertrains.
The company also introduced the plug-in hybrid variant in 2016. The top-of-the-line variant was launched with the S55 twin-turbo straight-six engine.
Seventh Generation (2018-Present)
